August Hunt with Lee

Lee came down  at the end of August for some Axis Hunting.  This trip had us working pretty hard and at one point I thought he would go home empty handed.  Things turned for the better on Sunday evening as the sun set.  After looking for one that I had apparently missed, we stumble across the 31" inch old boy with a 25" inside spread.  I had to work Monday morning so Lee went to the ranch by himself.  On the way to the blind he found the smaller 28" bull chasing a cow.  The bull stopped behind a cedar bush and only exposed his antlers and the very top of his skull.  It was just enough for Lee to place the 150 grain .300 mag in his skull.  You can see in the photos where the shot found its mark.  Luckily the bulls head did not explode preserving his trophy skull.  Both bulls were shot less than 100 yards from each other.

Lee's Hunt

The first hunt of the season, was Lee's best trip as well as mine.  We managed to shoot three Axis deer on the first day, then took Janis, our exchange student for his first hunt.  That morning, we shot a small spike at first light, then Lee made a perfect stalk on this beauty.  It measured 31 1/2 inches on the right and 31 inches on the left.  Later in the Day, Janis had the cross hairs on about 4 different Axis with one of them a 26 in bull.  He was a little slow on the trigger for those spooky deer.  We'll get him one before he goes home.
